Journal: What’s Next with AI?
The Future of AI in Teaching: A Personal Perspective
Artificial intelligence (AI) is
changing education in ways we never imagined. As a teacher, I’ve seen
technology transform how we teach and learn, and AI is taking this even
further. Based on the 2024 EDUCAUSE Horizon Report and my own experience, I see
both immediate and long-term effects of AI in education. While AI offers
exciting possibilities, it also brings challenges that we must handle
carefully.
AI’s Impact in the
Near Future (2 – 5 years)
In the short term, AI will be a helpful
assistant, not a replacement for teachers. AI tools can take over tasks like
grading, giving instant feedback, and creating lesson plans. This allows
teachers to focus more on engaging with students and personalizing learning. AI
can also identify learning patterns and provide tailored support, making
education more accessible for everyone.
However, as AI becomes more common, we
need to use it responsibly. The Horizon Report points out concerns like data
privacy, bias in AI algorithms, and academic integrity. Schools and teachers
must ensure AI is used to support learning rather than replace critical
thinking. Both students and teachers should develop AI literacy to understand
how AI works and evaluate its content critically.
AI’s Impact in the
Far Future (10 years)
In the long run, AI could completely
reshape education. Instead of just delivering content, teachers might become facilitators,
helping students explore and create their own learning experiences. AI tutors
could offer real-time support, adjusting to each student’s progress and needs.
AI analytics might also help teachers spot struggling students earlier,
allowing for better interventions and support.
Another big shift will be how we
assess students. Standardized tests might become outdated, replaced by
AI-powered assessments that focus on critical thinking, creativity, and
problem-solving. The challenge will be making sure AI enhances learning rather
than taking control of it. Education should always prioritize human skills like
emotional intelligence, collaboration, and ethical decision-making.
My Vision for AI in
Education
I strongly believe that AI should be ethically and
responsibly integrated into education. It should improve learning while keeping
human connection at the heart of teaching. No machine can replace the creativity,
empathy, and mentorship that teachers provide. Schools must set clear rules for
using AI fairly and safely, preventing misinformation, bias, and data security
risks.
Collaboration is also key. Teachers
from different fields should share ideas and best practices for using AI.
Schools and universities need to invest in training to help educators use AI
effectively and adapt to these changes.
Conclusion
Education is going through a major
transformation. AI is changing how we teach and what we teach. While there are
challenges, AI also gives us a chance to create more personalized, inclusive,
and effective learning experiences. As a teacher, I’m excited about these
changes, but I also want to ensure that AI is a tool for support, not a
replacement for educators. If we balance innovation with responsibility, we can
build a future where AI helps unlock human potential rather than limiting it.
