Week 04: Skill-building Websites for Reading/Writing Skills and Technology- enhanced Lesson Plans

In the Module 04 of the course, I had a chance to learn about Reading/Writing skill building and how to create a technology-enhanced lesson plan.

Like other Modules before that. First, I joined canvas to read the document that was assigned by Ms. Lan Huong then I joined the Discussion platform and this week, we shared about web pages that would work for us in our class. Include the specific web address (URL) of the page, the title of the page, the target students, why we teachers think it will work, and why we think it will be useful. What is an ABCD objective that we could create to go with this page?

And, here is my sharing

I would like to share the website https://www.nationalgeographic.com/ which is considered one of the most famous website for any student who wants to improve English in general and English reading skill in particular. The website is documenting the wonder of our world including its beauty, mystery, and the threats it faces and inspiring people to care and act on behalf of our planet and its people. Having searched and studied the website for several times, I found it would be really helpful and I would try to use this site’s material for my reading lesson next time.

ABCD Objectives: Providing reading material about all kinds of subjects (Condition) for the Pre-intermediate-level students (Audience) helps them practice reading comprehension skill (Behavior) with understanding the material 100% and remember more vocabularies (Degree).

Here is my sharing:

Another website really helps in teaching and writing which I have had chance to see is

https://www.esolcourses.com/content/topicsmenu/writing.html

ESOL courses are for learners whose first language is not English. Entering this website, learners can develop their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in the English language, and also their knowledge of language. Having search this website carefully, I think I would use this site to support for my writing lesson as it has a lot of organized and useful lessons for this skill.

ABCD objectives: Given materials – sentences & grammar structures (Condition), for the high school students level A2 (Audience) will be able to write paragraphs (Behavior) with relevant, appropriate and grammatically accurate sentences (Degree).

In the module, I was also allowed to practice creating a technology-enhanced lesson plan, which made me feel a little bit strange at first as I am used to writing lesson plans, so the technology-enhanced lesson might be more difficult for me to design. However, after my group members had showed their works in the online sharing session (Zoom), I found it was much easier and in this Reflection I want to mark here my product,

A technology-enhanced lesson plan

Class: E11-A3 (English Center in Ha Noi) - including: 20 grade-eleventh students

Skill level: elementary

Subject: Speaking skills - Topic: Save the environment

Duration: 60 minutes

Technology Products Used: Facebook.com, Youtube.com, Voicethread.com and Google.com

Materials & Tech Requirements: computers or laptops with internet access, pictures, videos, cell phones,..

Introduction

Review of previous lesson:

Having studied the Reading and Listening Skill parts about the topic: Save the environment, students learned certain topic vocabularies and also had general knowledge about this topic through reading and listening materials as well as practiced exercises.

Objectives of this lesson (tell students about them):

Provided materials and technology products (Condition), the 11-grade students (Audience) will be able to be aware of the environmental problems, develop their speaking and presentation skills, make use of technology in searching information about the topic, use technology to promote their learning language process (Behaviour) confidently and fluently (Degree).

Procedure

Instructions (step-by-step procedure)

-         Firstly, teacher divides class into groups.

-         Then teacher creates a group on Facebook and up load some pictures about some kinds of environmental pollution: air/ land/ noise / water pollution. Each group will be responsible for one kind of environmental pollution.

-         Next, teacher asks students to find out more information (using Google.com) about the fact, consequence and the solution for each kind of environmental pollution that they choose.

-         Students record their project in video format (all members in the group must present), post the videos on Youtube or Voicethread and submit the links on Facebook Group.

-         After that teacher asks students to watch, comment and vote for their classmates’presentations.

Technology alternative (in case things don't work as planned): Plan B

In case of there is no Interent connection or computer/labtop is out of order, teacher can ask students to use pictures, handouts, A1-A0 paper, markers, white board to prepare for their group presentation. And these presentation is still conducted and assessed right in front of class.

Review before the end of the class session / Assessment Plan

-         After students submit their videos, teacher asks all students to watch, comment and vote for their favourite video.

-         Teacher also watches the videos, give comments and marks based on the criteria: organization, content, presentation skills, pronunciation and visual aids.

-         Total marks are based on students’ comments, votes and teacher’s assessment.

Homework: Students are asked to continue to work in groups to prepare one more presentation about another kind of environment pollution.

Gradually, I feel that the course of Internet in English teaching is not as tough as I expect, and every week goes by, I have learned something new. During the course, I have had the opportunity to apply technology tool and methods  to my teaching by designing blogs, keeping bookmarks and writing learning objectives. I look forward to the upcoming modules where I hope to gain more precious knowledge.
